Nightside Plasmaspheric Plume? To?Core Migration of Whistler?Mode Hiss Waves

چکیده
Whistler-mode hiss waves play an important role in the radiation belt electron depletion. Whether with significant differences amplitude and propagation direction within plasmaspheric core plume are related to each other remains unclear. We here show that facilitates energy conversion from energetic electrons then guides into core. Three ground space missions captured initial formation subsequent rotation of noon-dusk-midnight sector following a strong substorm. The observed nightside propagated oppositely but highly correlated at time lag 4–10 s. linear instability qualitatively explains frequency-dependence waves, ray-tracing modeling reproduces timing waves.

An observation linking the origin of plasmaspheric hiss to discrete chorus emissions.
A long-standing problem in the field of space physics has been the origin of plasmaspheric hiss, a naturally occurring electromagnetic wave in the high-density plasmasphere (roughly within 20,000 kilometers of Earth) that is known to remove the high-energy Van Allen Belt electrons that pose a threat to satellites and astronauts. A recent theory tied the origin of plasmaspheric hiss to a seeming...
متن کاملA theoretical veri®cation of intensity of plasmaspheric ELF hiss emissions: theory versus GEOS-1 observations
An attempt is made to con®rm the generation mechanism of plasmaspheric ELF hiss emissions observed aboard GEOS-1 satellite in the equatorial region both at small and large wave normal angles by calculating their magnetic ®eld intensities in terms of incoherent Cerenkov radiation mechanism and cyclotron resonance instability mechanism, using appropriate and suitable plasma parameters. The ELF in...
متن کاملModeling radiation belt electron dynamics during GEM challenge intervals with the DREAM3D diffusion model
[1] As a response to the Geospace Environment Modeling (GEM) “Global Radiation Belt Modeling Challenge,” a 3D diffusion model is used to simulate the radiation belt electron dynamics during two intervals of the Combined Release and Radiation Effects Satellite (CRRES) mission, 15 August to 15 October 1990 and 1 February to 31 July 1991. The 3D diffusion model, developed as part of the Dynamic Ra...
متن کاملTwostream modeling of plasmaspheric refilling
Plasmaspheric refilling on an L = 4 flux tube was studied by using a time-dePendent, hydrodynamic plasmaspheric flow model in which the ion streams from the tWO hemispheres are treated as distinct fluids. In the model the continuity, momentum, and energy equations of a twoion (O + and H+), quasi-neu.tral, currentless plasma are solved along aclosed geomagnetic field line; diffusive quilibrium i...
متن کاملKilometer-sized Waves in Electron Density in the Venusian Nightside Ionosphe•
As periapsis of the Pioneer Venus Orbiter (PVO) descended into the lower nightside ionosphere of Venus in the Fall of 1992, wave-like ionospheric density structures began to appear on some of the volt-ampere characteristics of the Orbiter Electron Temperature Probe. The number of such events is insufficient to fully define their morphology but enough to provide an indication of the wave amplitu...
